It was a long time ago, but it was also not a long time ago - when we could meet together over pipes, tobaccos and booze to enjoy each others' company and share tobacco and show off our pipes locally.
We took turns hosting in each other's homes; sometimes inside and sometimes outside (winter was inside - definitely). Our club was very fortunate in having someone in our midst who knew A LOT about pipes and tobacco and the history of everything to do with pipes and tobaccos. Encyclopaedic in knowledge and breadth of understanding. Doug was his name and Rusty was his nickname. We miss him still to this day, and not one day goes by when I reach for a pipe that he is not on my mind.
The picture below was around 2006 or so, when I was at one of our club's meetings at my apartment in Ottawa. Doug's long Canadian Calich pipe is near to me, and I'm cutting up some plug that someone had brought.
We're going to try and get back to these types of gatherings whenever possible. Of course, with Covid-19 so rampant, our meetings will be, of necessity, online to begin with - but we can come together in various ways online if we want to. Then, perhaps we can actually gather once we have the safe ability to do so.
In the meantime, I will continue to beef up this site and build it up to a nice resource for us all.
